Dementia Diagnosis, now what?
Dementia Assessments & Care Funding: A Quick UK Guide
If you are wondering if it's dementia, how to pay for care, or what level of support fits we have put together a 3-minute reference to get started.
Firstly, start with a GP appointment and ask for an assessment. Once you have a diagnosis, or not, you can then decide on how you manage the changing cognitive needs
Here's funding at a glance across the UK as of July 2026 - don’t forget to check the .Gov websites for up-to-date information.
Funding by nation - where you live matters…
England — You will be self-funded above £23,250 in capital; below £14,250, savings aren't counted.
Wales — A more generous offering: your self-fund threshold is £24,000 for home care, £50,000 for care homes, plus there is a weekly charge cap on certain home care costs.
Scotland — A different offering as personal and nursing care is free regardless of means. For care home accommodation costs, you are self-funding above £35,000, fully supported below £21,500.
Northern Ireland — Same thresholds as England (£23,250 / £14,250), assessed by your local HSC Trust.
Choosing the right care - what are the options?
Getting help in early in the dementia journey can be vital as a condition such as Dementia progresses
Hourly visits — Pop in care for those mostly independent, perhaps early on in their dementia journey, just needing help with specific tasks and possibly having other support from family throughout the day.
Daily care — longer and more regular visits in the day, for not only practical tasks such as washing, meals, and safety concerns, but for companionship and overall well-being, support with hobbies and social interactions
Live-in care — A carer staying in the home throughout the day and overnight offers consistent and more reliable support with every aspect of daily routine, from dressing to washing, cooking and hobbies. This can be a single care professional or a small team of familiar carers — this is especially valuable for dementia, where routine and consistency are usually key to managing the condition as it progresses.
